South Australia records first monkeypox case

South Australia has recorded its first case of monkeypox.

The case was detected in a returned overseas traveller, who was diagnosed by his GP after he developed symptoms.

The man is in a stable condition and is isolating at home.

Health authorities have not disclosed which country the man travelled from or which port he flew into on his return to Australia.

However, they said there is no risk to the South Australian community.

No local close contacts have been identified.

Chief public health officer Professor Nicola Spurrier encouraged people to be vigilant.

"The most important thing is this individual recognised that they had these legions and went and got them tested," Spurrier said.

"That's what we would hope all Australians do if they are travelling overseas."

An alert has been sent to doctors across the state to make them aware of the disease and its symptoms.
