South Australia facing severe water crisis amid driest summer in 33 years

South Australia is set to record its driest summer in 33 years, forcing farmers and families that live off rainwater to spend thousands of dollars on water deliveries.

"It's been a hard summer just with the lack of water," Strathalbyn resident Emily Farmer said.

"(We take) very short showers, and I think if we do get very low we've got to go to a family's house to have a shower… (we're) trying to be very conscious of what we are using and when."

The dry conditions have severely impacted farmers across the state. 

"Because we have had no rain in January of February this year that means we are totally dependent on rainfall in April to October this year because we have no sub-soil moisture," farmer John Lush said.

The state's water reservoirs have dropped to their lowest point in more than 20 years, currently sitting at about 40 per cent capacity.

Water delivery services say they're experiencing unprecedented demand, with one provider 9News spoke to reporting a three-week backlog.

The Farmer family says if there is no rainfall soon, they will be forced to leave their home.
