South Australia braces for more wild weather as damaging winds smash state

South Australia has been battered by powerful winds and heavy rains - leaving 7000 properties without power - but the worst of it is still to come.

A cold front has crossed Adelaide, bringing heavy rains with it. The metropolitan area was set to receive up to 15mm of rain this afternoon, while the Mount Lofty Ranges was estimated to record as much as 30mm of rain. However Adelaide recorded less than three millimetres, while Mount Lofty recorded a little over five millimetres.

Wind gusts reached 93km/h on Kangaroo Island this morning, with coastal areas set to experience damaging wind gusts above 90km/h as the front pushes through to the east.

Winds will increase again overnight on the West Coast and Lower Eyre Peninsula in particular, with potential gusts of between 100 and 110km/h.

SA Power Networks says damage to equipment has caused blackouts around Port Augusta.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for coastal districts across SA and said damaging winds were forecast in some areas along with rain and hail.

The State Emergency Services says it has responded to 23 calls for assistance so far today.

Conditions are likely to improve tomorrow afternoon, with a high pressure system providing calmer and dryer weather from Thursday into the weekend.
