Solemn Aussie site tops list of world's most intriguing abandoned places
Each year, thousands of people travel to abandoned buildings and locations across the globe.

10. Buzludzha, Bulgaria
The Buzludzha Monument in central Bulgaria has been ranked the world's 10th most famous abandoned buildings globally by unoccupied property insurance provider Alan Boswell Group.
The site, constructed in 1981, was used by the Bulgarian communist government.
The giant monument was used until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989.
This building received more than 18,000 tags on Instagram annually.
9. Ohio State Reformatory, USA
The Ohio State Reformatory had a goal to truly "reform" and rehabilitate its inmates after it first opened in 1898.
The facility closed in 1990 and sat empty for several years. Each year, there are about 21,000 tags of Instagram.
8. Gereja Ayam, Indonesia
An unusually shaped house of prayer in Central Java continues to be a popular tourist destination in Indonesia.
Construction on the church was never completed after work was halted in 2000.
Each year about 50,000 people tag this location on Instagram.
7. Lago di Resia Bell Tower, Italy
This lonely bell tower is one of the most Instagrammable locations with about 54,000 tags each year.
The sunken tower can be found near the border of Switzerland.
6. Canfranc, Spain
This abandoned railway station is located in the municipality Spanish of Canfranc, close to the border with France.
It first opened in 1928, bit closed its doors by 1970. The spot generates just under 60,000 tags a year.
5. Beelitz Military Hospital, Germany
This large hospital complex has been left abandoned since 1990.
The facility was first built in 1898 as a sanatorium, but was transformed into a hospital at the beginning of WWI. It's understood Hitler was treated here after being wounded in the Battle of Somme.
About 64,000 people tag this location each year.
4. Eastern State Penitentiary, USA
This location is tagged by 79,000 tourists each year and is described as one of the country's most historic prisons.
The prison was closed in 1971 and housed some famous prisoners such as Al Capone.
3. Croix-Rouge, Paris
This train station has been abandoned since 1939 after France entered WWII.
The station was only functional for 16 years. There are about 95,000 tags for this location annually.
2. Teufelsberg, Germany
Teufelsberg was one of the largest listening towers in the world during the Cold war.
The site was closed in 1972. About 128,000 people tag this spot on Instagram each year.
