Soldier's hospitalisation a tragedy: Payne

Defence Minister Marise Payne has described the hospitalisation of an Australian Defence Force member serving in Afghanistan after a reported suicide attempt as an unsettling tragedy.

Defence confirmed on Monday that a soldier was admitted to a specialist medical facility in Landstuhl, Germany for a "non-combat related medical issue".

"This is, of course, an absolute tragedy and a very, very unsettling event," Senator Payne told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

"Our thoughts are with the soldier and with their family."

The soldier reportedly raised allegations of bullying with senior command but received no support, Melbourne's 3AW radio has reported.

It's understood the person is in a critical condition.

The ADF said it wouldn't release further information due to privacy but an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"The ADF is providing support to the member and the member's family," Defence said in a statement.

"This includes providing regular contact with the identified family members, and has offered counsellor support."
