Social services dept does GST modelling

The Department of Social Services has conducted modelling of the impact a hike in the GST would have on welfare recipients.

The department met with Treasury officials last year on ways to compensate the most vulnerable, including preparatory work if there were to be a hike to the consumption tax.

However, officials told a Senate estimates on hearing on Thursday the department was not directed to conduct the analysis but was showing initiative in preparation for such an outcome.
