Horrifying footage of deadly car smash into pedestrians

One person has been killed and several injured after a car ploughed into a group of pedestrians in Russia.

The accident took place in Sochi, one of several cities hosting the ongoing World Cup football tournament.

Following initial reports the driver had been intoxicated, police said he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Horrifying footage shows the car veering into the wrong lane and heading towards a group of pedestrians who had just crossed the road.

They were walking with their backs to the oncoming vehicle, oblivious to it.

The car mounts the kerb and crashes into the group, knocking several down before crashing into another car and coming to a halt.

Authorities said one 63-year-old man had been killed and up to five had been injured.
