Socceroos through to Asian Cup quarter finals after trouncing Oman

The Socceroos have waltzed into the Asian Cup quarter-finals with a dazzling 4-0 rout of Oman.

Goals rained from unlikely sources as veteran Matt McKay, livewire Robbie Kruse and evergreen Mark Milligan scored in a 20-minute blitz before substitute Tomi Juric later added another.

Australia cemented their foothold in the finals, holding a six-goal buffer on also qualified South Korea, who they meet in Brisbane on Saturday night.

The Socceroos will head the group if they win or even draw that match.

The tournament hosts dismantled Oman with style and substance before a raucous 50,276-strong Sydney crowd.

This was the long-held picture of coach Ange Postecoglou, painted perfect.

The rout began with a rare goal from McKay, who turned 32 on Sunday and is so old-fashioned he's the only Socceroo to tuck in his shirt.

His point-blank finish came from a Massimo Luongo corner arrowed to Trent Sainsbury, who nodded to McKay - a metre from goal and unmarked - to tap in his second goal in 51 internationals.

Three minutes later on the half hour, Luongo, who was man of the match in the tournament-opening 4-1 triumph against Kuwait, crafted another with a sublime showing of skill.

He gathered a testing ball in midfield and used the outside of his right foot to play in Kruse with a lobbed pass.

Kruse, steaming at goal, nudged the ball with a thigh without breaking stride before nailing a low-right footer under Oman's captain and goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

Kruse was an ever-present threat: he also shaved a post with an audacious 20-metre curler and lobbed on to the top netting from the same distance.

But it was teammate Milligan, who replaced injured captain Mile Jedinak in the holding midfield role, who scored the Socceroos' third - and he did it twice.

Milligan crunched a volley into the net from a Kruse cross just a split second after the referee blew for a penalty as acting skipper Tim Cahill was hauled to the ground by an Omani defender.

Milligan duly converted the spot kick with a cool strike to the upper left and the game, as a contest, was over.

Australia had the luxury of substituting Cahill in the 51st minute - he handed the captain's arm-band to Mark Bresciano - and from then on, the crowd turned festive.

The revelry peaked when sub Juric scored in the 70th minute from a millimetre-perfect cross from the influential Mathew Leckie, who swerved a pass across the goal with the outside of his foot. All Juric had to do was connect to score.

Oman coach Paul Le Guen said his outfit was overpowered by Australia, who he rated the tournament favourites.

"They were far better than us in each part of the game," Le Guen said.

"We weren't able to cope with such a rhythm, such a pace, three days after our game against South Korea ... we have to recognise the superiority of our opponent."

Oman's final fixture in the cup is against Kuwait in Newcastle on Saturday before both nations head home.

The Socceroos' victory was the biggest under Postecoglou in his 15 months in charge.

"Obviously we're very pleased. The players were fantastic tonight, their commitment, they worked really hard," Postecoglou said.

"Our football from the minute was fantastic.

"We got command pretty early ... I'm delighted the players could get the reward for it."

The Socceroos now have eight different scorers in the tournament.

"It just showed the even contribution ... we have got multiple threats," he said.

"But it all starts with commitment from everyone.

"No complaints from me: that was a fantastic performance."
