Let there be snow: Fresh falls on the way for alpine areas in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania

Good news for lovers of snow, and those looking for a last hurrah before school goes back next week.

Huge dumps of fresh powder are on the way for the Alpine regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania.

The country’s snow depth has increased for a third consecutive week with 15-30 centimetres expected to fall over the Alps tonight.

The depth at Spencers Creek is currently 99.8cm - that’s 10cm higher than this time last year.

With the fall forecast over a solid 12-hour period, meteorologists are predicting a bumper weekend of fresh snow.  

“If I was to pick a day to hit the slopes, it’d be Saturday,” said Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott.

“Perhaps extend that out to Sunday morning. The wind will pick up again that afternoon.”

Australia is currently in what Ms Westcott calls a “lull”, the calm between two cold fronts.

“It’s windy today, but not as windy as yesterday, and it’s about to get windier,” she said.

In some of the Alpine regions “windier” means gusts of more than 125km/h.

But the severe weather warnings for wind currently in place are expected to drop in time for the weekend.

“The wind will leave and it’ll be nice clear conditions, with sunshine,” said Ms Westcott.

The cold front is also going to bring with it some frosty starts to the morning for inland areas of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT and southern Queensland.

While it won’t be overly cold, we can expect to wake up to a layer of frost on both Saturday and Sunday, Ms Westcott said.

Temperatures however aren’t predicted to dip as low as last weekend, thanks to the air not being as dry this time around.
