CHILDREN UNDER THE STATE'S CARE IN VICTORIA:

YOUTH JUSTICE SYSTEM

* Now two youth justice centres in Victoria - Parkville and Malmsbury

* 85 pct of children under juvenile justice order serve time in the community

* Fall in number of young people in detention - from 172 on an average night in June quarter 2010 to 150 in 2014

INCIDENTS

* 121 incidents reported involving sexual behaviour between January 2005 and June 2015

- 16 reports of sexual abuse

- 29 reports of events threatening health, safety and wellbeing

- remainder significant events

* Two reports of sexual abuse in 2015

RESIDENTIAL CARE

* 8,187 children in care at June 30, 2015

* 441 in residential care

* 51 pct (just over 4,000) in kinship care

* Almost 1,600 in other home-based care such as foster care
