Snapshot of diabetes in Australia

DIABETES IN AUSTRALIA:

* Around 1.2 million Australians have diabetes, although it's estimated an additional 500,000 people have undiagnosed type-2 diabetes.

* More than 100,000 people develop diabetes every year, equivalent to one person every five minutes.

* It's the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia. If it continues to rise at current rates, up to three million Aussie adults will have diabetes by 2025.

* It's more common in older Australians, with about 60 per cent of people with diabetes aged 60 or older.

* Indigenous Australians are three times more likely to have type-2 diabetes compared to non-Indigenous Australians.

* Obesity is a major contributor to type-2 diabetes, which accounts for 85 per cent of all diabetes.

* Total annual cost impact in Australia is estimated to be $14.6 billion.
