Smoking causes 16 cancers, Quit Vic says

Smoking causes 16 types of cancer, a new advertising campaign by Quit Victoria says.

The television advertising campaign starts on Sunday night, will run for six weeks and aims to bust the perception that lung cancer is the only cancer caused by smoking.

Some of the cancers being linked to smoking include mouth, nasal, liver, stomach, kidney, bowel, ovarian and leukaemia.

Almost 2250 Victorians died from smoking-related cancer in 2013, nine times the state's road toll of 243 deaths.

This illustrated the devastating impact smoking continued to have on the community, despite declining smoking rates, Cancer Council of Victoria CEO Todd Harper said.
