Four people evacuated after car fire sets Sydney home alight

Four people were evacuated from a Sydney house after a car fire spread to the home and a second car.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Alt Street, Smithfield, at about 2.55am after residents were awoken by a loud bang.

They attempted to use garden hoses and fire extinguishers to put out the flames, but the fire quickly spread to the home.

When police arrived at the scene the front of the home and two cars were engulfed in flames.

Police evacuated four residents from the home.

The fire was initially treated as an arson attack, commencing a manhunt; however, CCTV footage from a neighbouring house revealed that the blaze started within the parked Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

No injuries were reported.

The specific cause of the fire within the car is unknown as the residents had only owned the car for a year.
