Smartphone app helps find lost Sydney bushwalker

A lost bushwalker has been found safe and well in Sydney's south after police dispatchers told her to downland an emergency app on her smartphone so her location could be pinpointed using GPS.

Police were called to the Mooray walking track at Heathcote about 6pm yesterday, following reports of a lost bushwalker.

Dispatchers contacted the lost 56-year-old woman and advised her to download the Emergency+ app on her smartphone.

After receiving her GPS coordinates through the app, police were able to establish a precise search area and police, fire service and ambulance personnel conducting the search found her safe and well.

Inspector Mick Merrett of Miranda Local Area Command said having the exact GPS coordinates from the Emergency+ app saved a lot of search time and he encouraged anyone with a smart phone to download it.
