Geelong boy saved by brother after electric blanket sparks fire

A teen has pulled his younger brother to safety after an electric blanket exploded and caught fire with the 10-year-old fast asleep beneath it.

Tristan was playing Xbox inside their Geelong home when he heard a smoke alarm go off and ran into his younger brother Christopher’s room to find the blanket alight.

“It was pretty bad, bit of a shock to see my brother half on fire,” Tristan told 9NEWS.

He pulled his brother to safety then along with his father, doused the flames with buckets of water.

Tristan said it was “hard to breathe” as smoke had quickly filled the house.

Christopher suffered minor burns to his leg.

The blanket was only purchased a couple of months ago and had been left switched on as the boy went to sleep.

“We don’t recommend that any blankets are left on,” firefighter Mark Sinkinson said.

“He is very lucky to be alive, because of the working smoke alarm and the quick action of his family,” he said.

Energy Safe Victoria are investigating the incident.
