First trains run on Melbourne's skyrail project

The first section of Melbourne's controversial new skyrail project has been officially unveiled.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was given a sneak peek of the section of elevated rail line that will re-open between Westall and Dandenong stations on Thursday.

"Lives will be saved, streets will be less congested and we'll be able to run more trains more often," the premier said.

From on top of the viaducts, Mr Andrews pointed out landmarks over Noble Park.

"There's the skate park I spend lots of time taking my son to," he observed while standing up front in the driver's cabin.

Around 150 train drivers have been undergoing training this weekend to familiarise themselves with the section of elevated line.

The Victorian Government has thanked commuters for their patience over a two-week shutdown, which saw boom gates at three level crossing removed.

But angry residents nearby have condemned the controversial project for its lack of consultation in taking the tracks skywards.

"Everyone wanted level crossings removed...n o one for a second thought they would be bullied into a skyrail," shadow public transport minister David Davis said.

Attention will now turn to the eight hectares open space created beneath the tracks.

"There will be two recreation reserves opened up and there will be an off-leash dog park as well," Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said.

But the Opposition has warned the area could be a target for graffiti and vandalism.

The final section of the elevated rail corridor will be completed within the next before the end of the year.
