A burger chain has been sent a cease-and-desist after their tribute to a '90s restaurant icon fell afoul of trademark rules.

Burger Urge created a burger called The Sizzler, a reference to the all-you-can-eat restaurant chain Sizzler.

The burger is fried chicken, bacon and aioli sandwiched between two slices of cheese bread.

But Sizzler, which still has nine restaurants open around the country, was not impressed.

"Sizzler are quite upset, they've sent Burger Urge a cease and desist asking them to stop selling the burger," Burger Urge spokesman Pete Kilroy told 9News.

"They're going to have to change the name to 'The Sizzle' now."

Mr Kilroy said the burger was an "homage to a cultural icon of Australia in the 1990s".

The cheese bread is a reference to a popular item on Sizzler's menu.

"To be honest we didn't think there were any Sizzlers left, we thought they all went broke in the early 2000s, long after the pumps in our Reeboks had stopped working," Mr Kilroy said.

"Sizzler also has a problem with Burger Urge selling cheese bread which is interesting because the last time we checked Sizzler did not invent putting cheese on the bread."

The item has proved popular among Burger Urge diners, so it will stay on the menu, albeit with a different name.

"Unfortunately somebody is going to have to go through the 30,000 menus that have already been printed and actually cross out the 'R' to make it The Sizzle," Mr Kilroy said.

"It's not a job I would want but someone's going to have to do it."

Sizzler has not responded to 9News.com.au's request for comment.

Burger Urge has restaurants across Queensland and in regional NSW and Victoria.
