A 10m sinkhole has swallowed a large part of the Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach causing major havoc for motorists.

Two south-bound lanes of the highway near the corner of Hooker Boulevard and Margaret Street have had to be shut after a water pipe burst, creating the sinkhole.

"There's been a major water main break at the corner of Margaret Avenue and Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach," a council spokesman told News Corp.

"City of Gold Coast crews are on site assessing the problem.

"The Gold Coast Highway has been closed, only one southbound lane remains open. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and use a different route.

"Delays are expected for the rest of the day and possibly tomorrow."
