Sightseers putting Vic fire crews at risk

Firefighters are being put at risk by sightseers who are ignoring road closed signs and driving into active bushfire areas, authorities say.

Fire crews working on the massive northern Grampians fire and the Stawell Bunjils Cave Road fire are encountering sightseers entering the fire area, Incident Controller Dale Russell says.

"It is unbelievable that firefighters, who are continuing to work blacking out on both fires in preparation for the hotter week ahead, are having people impeding on them, putting themselves and our crews at risk," he said.

"The road closed signs are there for a reason and for people to be driving around them is a disgrace."

A number major roads in the area have reopened, including the Grampians Tourist Road which links Halls Gap with the southern Grampians town of Dunkeld.

Many Grampians campsites and walks including Silverband Falls and the Venus Baths are open and Tourism Minister Louise Asher has urged people to return to the area and support local businesses.

The Grampians fire has destroyed 10 homes and burnt more than 55,000 hectares.

More hot weather is forecast for the area next week with temperatures expected to reach 36C in Stawell on Monday and 38C on Tuesday and Thursday.
