Shortens kiss before voting

Bill and Chloe Shorten have shared a good luck kiss before casting their votes in the federal election.

After a busy day of sampling sausage sizzle and cakes in marginal seats in western Sydney the opposition leader and his wife returned to home turf in his electorate of Maribyrnong in Melbourne.

They walked to Moonee Ponds West Primary School with children Rupert and Clementine.

The youngster was excited to see a life-sized Dory fish character, trying to raise awareness about the plight of the Great Barrier Reef.

She also patted a puppy.

Inside the school gym, Mr and Mrs Shorten had their names ticked off and cracked jokes with the Australian Electoral Commission supervisor while they waited.

Mrs Shorten, who is shy about public displays of affection, shared a kiss with her husband before casting their votes side-by-side.

Mr Shorten finished filling out his form first, and waited as his wife wrestled with the huge Victorian senate voting paper.

"Feeling pretty positive," he told reporters.

"We'll find out soon enough."

As the pair placed their votes in the box, Mr Shorten said that's two more votes for his side.

On the way out of the school, Mr Shorten chatted to Helen Last, an advocate for victims of the clergy who urged him to commit more funding to support those who have given evidence to the royal commission.
