Shorten struggles with credibility: Abbott

Tony Abbott says the government is in a strong position heading towards an election next year as Bill Shorten struggles with "credibility issues".

The prime minister told a coalition joint party room meeting on Tuesday that Labor was becoming increasingly split on the issues of asylum seekers and national security.

A Liberal MP warned the meeting the government should stick to its core issues and play a "home game rather than an away game".
