Shorten pursues integrity in politics

Bill Shorten has his eyes set on improving integrity in politics, seeking a Senate inquiry into creating a national commission.

In an address to the National Press Club, the Labor leader outlined ways to improve transparency, including support for an independent expenses body, lowering the disclosure threshold and a fresh inquiry into the merits of a federal body.

"I'm not advocating a Senate inquiry into a National Integrity Commission because I believe corruption is widespread. I do so to lift public confidence," he said on Tuesday.

When asked why he wouldn't just back a commission, Mr Shorten said there was a range of existing measures against corruption.

It was important to learn the lessons from state bodies and investigate the merits of a national body, he said.

Mr Shorten also believes by seeking an inquiry Labor is sending the strongest possible message that it wants to do everything to ensure renewed confidence in politics.
