Shorten plays down mixed poll results

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has played down the latest polling that shows Labor trailing the coalition in key seats, saying Labor's issues are "beginning to bite".

The opposition leader vowed to keep pressing Labor's position on universities, health, negative gearing and the NBN for the final two weeks of election campaign, convinced Labor can win.

"I think the issues that me and my talented team are talking about are the issues Australians want to talk about," he told reporters on the NSW Central Coast on Saturday.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull wasn't keen to crow about the coalition's lead in marginal seat polling by Newspoll, saying the election was close.

"This is probably closer than most," he said.

Mr Turnbull again reminded Australians every vote counts.
