Abbott email sparks election talk

Prime Minister Tony Abbott may be talking down the idea of an early election, but a leaked email to coalition MPs has Canberra abuzz ahead of the six-week winter break.

The email invites members and senators to update their photographs with the prime minister "to use in local electorate materials".

Mr Abbott has left open a timeslot on Thursday afternoon for the happy snaps.

"Any MP wanting an updated photograph is welcome to drop around," says the email from chief of staff Peta Credlin, obtained by the ABC.

Mr Abbott told reporters he would advise anyone thinking there would be an early poll to "have a Bex and a long lie down".

"This is a government that was elected to govern for three years," Mr Abbott said.

"I think what you've seen over the last fortnight is probably the most productive fortnight in this term of parliament.

"I want to build on that and not cut it short."

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has told Labor caucus members the election could be held before parliament resumed on August 10 and they should be prepared.
