Shoppers 'distressed' by cop car driving into Brisbane organic market during coronavirus pandemic

Shoppers and stallholders at a Brisbane organic food market have been left startled after a police car drove through the centre of the usually bustling thoroughfare.

Video posted on the Northey St Organic Farmers Market Facebook page shows the police car coming close to market stalls and customers as it patrolled the market Saturday morning.

The footage emerged almost 10 days after large crowds were seen attending the Jan Powers Powerhouse Farmers' Markets in New Farm.

The April 4 incident was slammed by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who threatened to shut down markets if people continued to flout social distancing rules.

Ms Palaszczuk also warned Police would be cracking down over the Easter long weekend, which is presumably why the officer was on patrol at the market.

At one point in the footage, the vehicle reverses back through its original route precariously along pedestrian walkways.

The officer driving also had to pull in their side mirror to squeeze past an entry and exit sign.

"What is not ok is to drive into our market with pedestrians and children and park in a fashion that hinders physical distancing by blocking an aisle," organisers said on the market's Facebook page.

They said they asked the officer to park elsewhere and patrol by foot but claimed their requests were ignored.

"No fines were issued as we are compliant," they said.

"We are very sorry for the distress this caused to our staff, stall holders and customers.

"We welcome foot police back every Sunday and will offer them a take away organic coffee.

"We wonder if they would drive into a supermarket in this fashion."

Organisers said they were contacting Queensland Police to resolve the safety issue.

In a statement, a Queensland Police spokesperson said the local district is looking into the officers' actions.

"The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is aware the video posted on social media and the local police district is reviewing the actions of the police officers undertaking the compliance check," they said.
