NRL ‘powerless’ to stand down Shaun Kenny-Dowall over domestic violence charges: report

Sydney Roosters star Shaun Kenny-Dowall could reportedly still play on the weekend after being charged with a string of domestic violence offences against his ex-partner.

Following earlier revelations Kenny-Dowall was the subject of an AVO taken out by Jessica Peris, the daughter of Senator Nova Peris, he was charged by police in Maroubra this afternoon.

The NRL star handed himself in at the station.

Kenny-Dowall, 28, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, six counts of common assault, destroy or damage property, use carriage service to menace/harrass/offend and stalking/intimidation.

It is alleged the offences took place between October 10 last year and June 24 this year.

The Sydney Roosters have released a statement saying they were aware of the allegations but would be making no further comment.

An NRL spokesman also issued a short statement saying due process should be followed but there was "no place" for domestic violence in the game or society.

"We will monitor the case and take appropriate action when the full facts of the case are clear," the spokesman said.

However, the NRL has said it is "powerless" to suspend Kenny-Dowall over a club matter, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported.

This means he could still play for the Roosters against the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday.

Kenny-Dowall and Ms Peris, a sprinter, had been in a relationship for more than two years before reportedly separating several weeks ago.

Kenny-Dowall was granted conditional bail and will face court on July 23.
