Fisherman's encounter with 'one angry' great white shark off NSW

A New South Wales fisherman had a thrilling encounter with "one angry" great white shark this week.

Professional angler Jason Moyce was able to capture a single close-up off the apex predator after it rammed his boat with extreme force, off Bermagui on the south coast.

He uploaded the photo to his Facebook page, Trapman Bermagui, showing the animal hit his boat so hard it was left with blue paint marks.

Moyce told 9News.com.au the encounter was intense, but short.

"The shark was about four-metres long," he told 9news.com.au

"It came up and hit the boat with its face, hence the blue paint.

"Them I put GoPro in the water and got the one picture before it disappeared into the blue."

Moyce is no stranger to such marine encounters.

He was forced to abandon his catch one February morning last year, when he hauled up three sharks.

Each was bitten cleanly through by a much larger predator.

CSIRO has identified two great white populations in Australia - an eastern population and a southern-western population.

The eastern population is estimated at 5460, but Australia's leading scientific research body has admitted there could be more than 12,802 great whites cruising the waters.

The size of the south-western population is "not yet determined", but estimates suggest there are about 1460 adults.
