Stand up paddleboarder bitten by bull shark tangled in his leg rope

A stand up paddleboarder suffered a minor wound this morning in a suspected bull shark attack on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

The man told 9news he was paddling in the canals of Pelican Waters when something became entangled in his leg rope.

“Pulled me off the board and grabbed hold of my hand, tried to pull me back into the creek then let go,” he said.

He said he “walked on water” to get out of the water as quickly as possible.

The man said he suspected he had been bitten by a small bull shark, less than one metre long.

“When I tried to pull the leg rope out he’s given me a little bite on the hand,” the man said.

“It didn’t hurt, the bite, but the sensation of him pulling me back towards the water was a little bit out there, yeah, he was a pretty strong little bugger.”

He said he attempted to stop the bleeding then walked home, as his phone was at the bottom of the creek.

The man is in a stable condition with a minor puncture wound on his wrist.

He was taken to a medical centre in Caloundra as a precaution.

Bull sharks are known to swim in the canal systems around Pelican Waters.

The man said the incident won't keep him out of the water in future.
