Shannon Noll's 'bogan' rendition of the Australian anthem

Shannon Noll has fired back on Twitter at "haters" who accused the singer of delivering the "most bogan" rendition ever of the national anthem.

The former Australian Idol contestant was suited-up and sweating profusely as he sang Advance Australia Fair at yesterday's Cox Plate at Victoria's Moonee Ponds.

Within seconds of Noll dropping the opening note, critics took to Twitter to accuse him of "murdering" the "most bogan rendition" of the anthem ever heard.

Noll, who rose to fame with his rough-around-the-edges country crooner style, appeared to add his own twang to the anthem, broadcast live to a national audience on Channel 7.

Critics pointed out that his thick accent suggested he read the lyrics as "Advernce Austraya Fair".

"Breaking news: Vic Police Detectives on way to Moonee Valley to investigate claims Shannon Noll murdered the national anthem," one person wrote on Twitter.

After the event, the singer from Condobolin in rural NSW, wasted no time defending himself.

"Get stuffed mate #hater," Noll wrote to one of his attackers online.

It's not the first time our anthem has been butchered in recent weeks.

Earlier this month Argentine singer Marcelo Zelada copped a beating on social media after completely forgetting the words during his performance of the anthem at the Wallabies v Pumas in Mendoza.
