Severe weather warning issued for Victoria

Damaging winds and possible thunderstorms are forecast for much of Victoria, with authorities issuing a severe weather warning.

A strong cold front will cross the state on Sunday, bringing winds averaging 60km/h to 70km/h with possible peak gusts of 90km/h to 100km/h.

The northeast Alpine and Grampians peaks are expected to experience gusts of up to 120km/h.

The front is expected near the western border of Victoria about 7am, near a line from Kerang to Geelong at midday, and Tocumwal to Latrobe Valley by 6pm.

Victoria State Emergency Service commander David Baker warns flash flooding could happen in areas, and the weather will be difficult for tourists and campers.

"While much of Victoria has had fine weather so far this weekend, Sunday will bring significant changes in the morning and again in the afternoon,'' he said.

"It's extremely important that people take extra care when travelling on the roads - especially when driving in unfamiliar areas. Remember to never drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater."
