Severe weather warning issued for Gippsland region

A severe weather warning has been issued for the Gippsland region, with gusts of up to 100 km/h forecast.

Damaging winds of 50 to 60 km/h are also expected, with those living in North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland expected to be affected.

The Bureau of Meteorology has attributed the cause as a deep low pressure system and cold front.

The front is expected to move into western Victoria tonight.

The State Emergency Service recommends residents:

* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees

* Secure or put away loose items around homes, yards and balconies

* Keep clear of fallen power lines
