Severe weather warning for SA

Still recovering from a prolonged swelter, South Australia is now facing heavy rainfall and damaging winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Thursday issued a severe weather warning for people in the Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, North West Pastoral and parts of the Flinders districts.

It says a tropical low currently over Western Australia will combine with another low developing over western SA later on Thursday and this system will then move east across the state during Friday.

The affected districts may experience flash flooding and heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The State Emergency Service is urging people to be particularly careful on the roads on Thursday.

"We have received a number of reports of localised flooding with water across roads in a number of locations across Adelaide," SES State Duty Officer Graeme Wynwood said.

"Following a long period of very dry weather the roads are extremely slippery so it is imperative that motorists drive to the conditions."

On Wednesday, Adelaide set a summer record when it recorded its 13th day of a temperature over 40 degrees.
