Victoria bracing for damaging winds with severe weather warning issued

Residents in parts of Victoria are bracing for damaging winds after the Bureau of Meterology issued its 50th severe weather warning for the state this month.

Damaging winds of between 60 and 100 km/h are expected to hit Wimmera, Southwest, North Central, Central, West and South Gippsland districts on Sunday evening.

This has prompted the bureau to issue a severe weather warning for these areas, along with parts of the Mallee, Northern Country, Northeast and East Gippsland.

Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Traralgon and Bairnsdale may also be affected by wild winds.

The wind warning mark the 50th severe weather warning issued for Victoria in October, the BoM says.

The bureau has cancelled its severe weather warning for thunderstorms, which were expected to bring large hailstones, heavy rainfall, and the risk of flooding to Victoria's southeast.

The BoM has also forecast possible hail and thunderstorms across Melbourne on Sunday evening, with winds reaching up to 50 km/h.

After reaching a top of 27 degrees in Melbourne earlier on Sunday, a strong cold front passing over the state has caused temperatures in the city to dip below 15 degrees.
