Severe thunderstorms set to batter South Australia and western Victoria

Severe thunderstorms are set to sweep through much of South Australia and western Victoria this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for both states, with heavy rainfall and damaging winds predicted.

In South Australia, people in areas including Renmark, Marla, Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs, Leigh Creek, Moomba, Hawker and Woomera are advised the heavy rain may lead to flash flooding.

The warning applies to the Flinders, Riverland, Murraylands, North East Pastoral and parts of the Mid North, Upper South East and North West Pastoral forecast districts.

The warning for Victoria advises damaging winds are set to affect Mildura, Horsham, Stawell, Hamilton, Wodonga and Wangaratta this afternoon.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should: 

* Keep clear of fallen power lines. 
* secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home. 
* stay indoors if possible. 
* Avoid using the phone during the storm. 
* if you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees 
* listen to the radio for storm updates 
* switch off your computer and electrical appliances
