Teen struck by lightning in South East Queensland storms which left thousands without power

A teenage boy has been struck by lightning and thousands of homes are without power this morning after damaging thunderstorms swept through South East Queensland overnight.

Almost 6000 homes across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Gympie, Ipswich, Logan, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast and several neighbouring areas are experiencing outages after supercell storms battered the region. 

In Allora on the Darling Downs Queensland Ambulance responded to a call for help to find a teenage boy had been struck by lightning, the ABC reports.

The teen was reported to have been holding a metal door at the front of his house at the time. His condition at present is unknown. 

Firefighters and paramedics also attended house fires in Kuraby, Brisbane and Millmerran, in the Darling Downs region after lightning strikes sparked several blazes.

Wild winds, heavy rainfall and golf-ball sized hail were reported, with multiple power lines brought down as a result.

An estimated 35,000 homes were left in the dark at the storm’s peak, The Courier Mail reports. 

The State Emergency Service received 48 calls throughout the evening to assist with damage caused by the storms.

Delays were also reported at Brisbane Airport, with some travellers stuck on the tarmac.

The storms are continuing to move through the Wide Bay Area, however the Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled its severe thunderstorm warning.

While the immediate threat has since passed, members of the public are nevertheless advised to:  

* Beware of fallen trees and power lines. 

* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it. 

* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
