Huge hail stones fall across south-east Queensland

Large hail stones and heavy winds hit parts of south-east Queensland yesterday afternoon, as a severe thunderstorm passed through the region.

Gympie, in the Wide Bay-Burnett region, bore the brunt of the wild weather, with golf ball-sized hail falling in some areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for large hailstones, destructive winds and heavy rainfall for parts of south-east Queensland, including Somerset, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Council Areas.

The SES was called to help at at least six homes, the ABC reports, for rain and hail damage.

Almost 4000 homes lost power during the storm, mainly in the Somerset region.

The warning was cancelled overnight, but the state is bracing for scorching temperatures tomorrow and over the weekend.
