Severe storms set to hammer NSW and Queensland

Storm and flood warnings have been issued across eastern Australia, with floods, heavy rain and hailstones predicted.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for a large swath of central NSW, including the Bourke, Dubbo and Parkes regions.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that these areas are likely to be hit with heavy rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds, and large hailstones – the signs of a dangerous potential supercell storm.

Flood warnings are also in place for Queensland, along with a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the Channel Country and the Maranoa and Warrego districts, south of Charleville.

Heavy rain earlier swamped Brisbane's south, though a severe storm warning for the area has since been cancelled.

A near-stationary band of rain and storms developed over southeast Queensland late on Thursday morning, targeting areas to the south of the Brisbane River.

Falls of 55 millimetres an hour were recorded at Leslie Harrison Dam, with others topping 30 millimetres an hour at Rochedale and Burbank.

The SES has urged residents in areas subject to warnings to secure loose items around their homes, move their car under cover and away from trees, and to not try to traverse any floodwaters whether on foot, on a bike, or in a car.

A humid airmass over the regions and surface troughs are being blamed for the storms.
