More than 15,000 lose power as early morning storm lashes the Gold Coast and Brisbane

More than 15,000 Gold Coast residents are without power after a storm swept south-east Queensland early today. 

Thunder and lightning rolled over Brisbane from about 4am AEST, with some residents taking to Twitter to remark upon the light show and lack of heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Gold Coast that has since been cancelled. It warned of heavy rainfall.

Energex said 15,579 Gold Coast residents had been affected by emergency power outages at 5.50am AEST, with 1019 Logan residents and 687 Brisbane residents also affected.
