Teenagers airlifted to hospital after Great Ocean Road accident

Two teenage girls have been airlifted to hospital and five others injured after a bus and car crashed on Victoria's Great Ocean Road.

Police said the driver of the V/Line bus suffered a medical episode resulting in the large vehicle swerving onto the wrong side of the road, causing the silver Holden Commodore to swerve and hit rocks along the popular road.

The teenage girls, understood to both be 13-years-old, were two of five people in the car trapped for up to an hour at Mount Defiance near Separation Creek about 10.30am today.

Once the teenage girls were freed, both were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

One was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital and the other to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with upper and lower body injuries. Both are in a stable condition.

Ambulance Victoria said a further five people were all taken by road ambulance to Lorne Community Hospital, including two men in their 50s and 60s, and a woman in her 50s.

All five patients were transported in stable conditions with no obvious injuries. 

V/Line confirmed the bus was travelling from Apollo Bay to Geelong.

Two replacement coaches were sent to collect passengers so they could continue their trip to Geelong once given the all clear by emergency services.

State Emergency Services (SES) told 9News a bus and a car collided near Artillery Rocks lookout.

Aerial footage captured by 9News shows a smashed car next to the cliff face and the bus's windscreen shattered.

It is understood the bus about was carrying about 11 passengers at the time of the crash.

The Great Ocean Road was closed in both directions for a stretch between Lorne and Wye River but has since re-opened.
