Series of cold fronts set to shake up recent mild weather

Parts of Australia's southeast are about to get a shakeup with a series of vigorous cold fronts lining up to knock out the recent mild winter conditions.

To start, a weakening cold front will move through the south tomorrow, bringing some light showers which will then escalate into wilder weather around Thursday and Friday.

The wild weather will generate squall-like winds across eastern states, however the days will feel warmer leading up to this.

Temperatures will then plummet as an icy cold air mass rolls in from as far south as Antarctica - moving inland with potentially damaging winds.

The most powerful winds are expected in Victoria and NSW this Thursday, with significant rainfall, possible hail and thunderstorms in Tasmania and southern parts of Victoria.

For skiing enthusiasts, the cold fronts will bring a solid amount of snowfall across the Australian Alps with the bulk of it hitting Thursday and lasting through into Saturday with more than half a metre expected to fall.

The wildest of the weather will start to ease over the weekend, but following the main cold fronts, a few weaker systems will follow keeping the days cold and wet through the southeast into next week.
