Senior federal police officer stood down

One of Australia's most senior police officers has been stood down pending an internal investigation.

"The Australian Federal Police can confirm a senior executive officer is currently on leave pending a professional standards investigation," a spokesman told AAP in a statement on Thursday.

"As the matter is ongoing it is not appropriate to comment further."

The AFP wouldn't name the officer but multiple outlets including the Sydney Morning Herald reported it is deputy commissioner Ramzi Jabbour.
