The controversial decision to lease the Darwin Port to a Chinese company will be subject to parliamentary scrutiny if a push by crossbench senators succeeds.

Independents Jacqui Lambie, Nick Xenophon, Glenn Lazarus and Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson are calling for a Senate inquiry into the Northern Territory government's decision to lease of the strategically-located port.

"From what I've heard it will not be a good thing," Senator Lazarus told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
