Senator warns against Vegemite red tape

Authorities have been warned not to regulate the sale of Vegemite even though the iconic spread is being used make home-brewed alcohol in some dry indigenous communities.

There have been calls to ban sale of the spread or monitor its distribution.

"It should be a total free market for Vegemite forever," Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm told reporters.
