Down in front: Selfie sticks banned from US festivals

Festival-goers at Coachella and Lollapalooza will have to take their selfies the old-fashioned, awkward, arm-stretching way this year.

Coachella and Lollapalooza have listed selfie sticks as “prohibited items”.

The selfie stick is an elongated rod used to position a smartphone or camera beyond the normal range of the arm.

The Frequently Asked Questions section of the Lollapalooza website lists “GoPro attachments like sticks, selfie sticks and monopods” under its list of prohibited items.

In a list of rules and policies, the Coachella website reads “No Selfie Sticks / Narcisstics”.

The decisions follow previous stipulations in the UK including the banning of selfie sticks in major British music venues, music news site NME reports.

The devices have reportedly been outlawed from the O2 Academy Brixton, London’s O2 Arena and the SSE Wembley Arena.

A spokesperson for the Wembly SSE Arena told NME anything that blocked the view of others was not welcome.
