LNP deputy Jeff Seeney tipped to resign to avoid leadership tussle

Queensland's deputy premier Jeff Seeney is expected to resign from the position today to clear the way for a new LNP leader without any in-party fighting.

The party is in crisis mode after Saturday's crushing election defeat, which included the ousting of premier Campbell Newman from the seat of Ashgrove after just one term.

Mr Newman has announced his retirement from politics and the LNP now has to decide who will head the party as it tries to rebuild.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls is tipped as the favoured successor, however Scott Emerson and John-Paul Langbroek are also possible alternatives.

Mr Seeney has reportedly already agreed to resign to avoid a leadership contest that could further damage the party.

He will hold a media conference today.

Vote counting is continuing this week, with Labor confident it can win the 45 seats needed to govern without the support of crossbench MPs.
