Pressure builds on Palaszczuk government as second woman accuses disgraced MP Billy Gordon of domestic abuse

A second woman has accused former Labor MP Billy Gordon of domestic violence as pressure grows on Annastacia Palaszczuk’s minority government.

The Queensland premier’s office was contacted last night via a letter by a woman who claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse, allegedly at the hands of Mr Gordon. She was referred to police, The Australian reports.

Queensland police confirmed yesterday they had launched an official investigation into the allegations levelled at Mr Gordon, which began when an ex-partner came forward and accused Mr Gordon of failing to facilitate child support payments, fraudulent tax behaviour and domestic violence.

Mr Gordon resigned from the ALP yesterday after it was revealed he had also not disclosed his criminal history to the Premier, including driving offences and break and enter offences.

He remains an independent, despite Ms Palaszczuk publicly calling for his resignation from parliament.

If he leaves parliament, his Far North Queensland seat of Cook will be subject to a by-election, rattling Labor’s minority government.

The area, encompassing Cape York, Port Douglas and Cooktown, is a traditionally safe Labor seat.

Mr Gordon has said he will cooperate fully with the police investigation and has pledged to pay outstanding child support and tax obligations.

The ALP now holds 43 seats in the 98-electorate parliament, after taking power from Campbell Newman’s government in February.
