Police have located the body of a boy who drowned while playing in Victoria's Murray River over the weekend.

The six-year-old's body was found this afternoon about 7.5km north of the Gunbower Island campsite he was swept away from on Saturday afternoon.

The boy had been swimming with six other children off the island at the popular tourist spot of Koondrook, near the NSW border, when they all started to drift downstream.

Four of the children managed to get themselves out of the water, but the other three began to struggle against the current.

Several adults jumped into the water and plucked two of the children out but couldn't find the six-year-old.

A police spokesman said the boy had been formally identified and a report will now be prepared for the Coroner.
