Police searching for man who allegedly sexually assaulted 83-year-old in her home

Police are appealing for information after an 83-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted at her home in Sydney's west.

Police were called to the home about 5.40pm yesterday to reports of a sexual assault in Merrylands.

Officers were told the woman had met an unknown man near Charles Mance Reserve about 12.30pm that day as she was coming home with a shopping trolley.

The man offered to help the woman carry the trolley home.

Police allege that once they arrived at the woman's home, the man forced his way inside and sexually assaulted the woman.

He then allegedly cleaned the scene and fled with her house keys.

The woman was taken to hospital for assessment while police set up a crime scene.

The State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad under Strike Force Bena is now investigating the incident.

Today, police released CCTV footage of a man who they say can help their inquiries.

He is described as having fair skin, dark hair and a slight beard. 

He was wearing a black shirt with white panels, dark blue pants, and white shoes.

Anyone with further information has been asked to come forward.
