Nine primary school children have been taken to hospital after suffering a reaction to a chemical imbalance in a Gold Coast swimming pool.

The students, all aged around eight years, complained of itchy eyes and respiratory problems as a result of too much chlorine in the Southport pool.

The Queensland Ambulance Service says the chemical imbalance wasn't at a dangerous level and the children were transported to Gold Coast University Hospital as a precaution.
