A teacher has been fined more than $1000 for speeding and driving without a proper licence while transporting a bus full of school children in NSW's Riverina.

Police say a white coach with Victorian registration plates was caught travelling at 125 kilometres per hour on the Hume Highway near Jugiong on Wednesday morning.

A 30-year-old school teacher told police he was transporting the 28 children back to Victoria after an event in Canberra.

However, the teacher did not hold the appropriate licence to drive such a large vehicle.

The man was fined and police grounded the bus, organising alternate transport for the children.

"The potential for a crash in this scenario was significant and we are thankful to have pulled the bus over before a tragedy unfolded," Acting NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Stuart Smith said.
